The girls walked into Far-Fetched Foods, but there was no Tab in sight—no Coke either, only carrot juice and unfiltered cider. MJ bought some trail mix, on the theory that at least it had chocolate chips.

On another day, Chloe might have asked MJ to drive because she was feeling quaky in the stomach. But This was her problem, her row to hoe, as Virginia would have said a few years ago, when she still said things that could be cross-stitched on little wall hangings. Besides, MJ seemed hungover, staring a little too intently at each speck of trail mix before popping it in her mouth.

It wasn’t until after Chloe tobogganed down the hills and slid on and off the cable car track and parallel parked in front of the building with her wheels cut to the curb that she realized she didn’t have a good idea what to expect. For all her note taking about the situation in general, she was sketchy about the specifics for her specifically.

Even the office was a surprise, three attached Victorians all painted shades of mauve. She’d figured it would be more office looking. A discreet brass plaque out front listed the clinic hours as eight thirty until three—school hours, Chloe thought.

It was 8:17.

Chloe and MJ played three quick games of thumb war. MJ won, won, won.
